The Afri‐CAN Café Co‐operative Charity (‘ACC’) announces that The Afri‐CAN Cafés at both Bwaila and Central Hospital have become regular venues for a series of health support lectures.
Conducted by Mara Kumbweza Banda, the lectures, known as ‘Café Chats’ have covered a number of subjects including Family Planning, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and Malaria. Each separate lecture covers prevention, symptoms, transmission and treatments for the diseases. Focus is given to only one disease per lecture.
Mara, Director of Paradiso House – home to one of our pilot bakeries, is the author of a booklet based on her Tuberculosis lectures that is now being used at both Central and Bwaila Hospitals. Ms Banda has subsequently been invited to Berlin in November to present at an international forum on HIV/Aids.
Attended by up to twenty‐five guests at a time, the lecture series is a perfect example of how The Afri‐CAN Cafés can take a central role in the communities that they support.
